Unit 38 Soundtrack

The Kingsman: Bar fight Scene

The sounds in the clip are dramatic and at times there are also some heroic sounds because it is required for the effect that it makes. This effect is of something or someone that is either becoming dramatic or heroic. An Example is shown when the group of boys that come inside the pub to look for trouble. The sound begins with a tension with in its tune. It then moves onto a sounds that starts to fade into a dramatic sound, this then creates a dramatic irony because the soundtrack suggests that an unsuspecting character is in imminent danger. Another effect this creates is Realism, it sorts of puts the audience on their feet making them feel the suspense that is being presented at that time. Like here when Colin Firth who plays Harry starts to look up the doors and turns his head towards the group of boys. This creates a suspense for the audience making them think whats going to happen.  Diegetic sound is sound that is naturally hearable in the scene. From watching The Kingsman I can say that the diegetic sound I heard was when the spy slammed and bolted the door. The effect of this is that it made the audience feel like we were trapped in and it created tensions for the antagonists as they have no were to escape.

There is a lot of Mise En Scene in this scene in particularly and they are Umbrellas, Sticks and Glass bottles. The use of these objects are to create a tension for the audience and this is done perfectly for some of the scenes in the Kingsman. There is an older middle aged man with a umbrella with him and this man uses his umbrella as a weapon and it isn't just a weapon its a special effect umbrella which has all sorts of powers. It also reflects back to the fact that he is working for a secret agent and so only he has the special effect umbrella. The use of these props during the scene creates tension because it makes the audience feel terrified as to what will happen because it doesn't really seem as if the man will do anything but when he reaches his umbrella the tension is thrown dramatically at the audience because they didn't expect it.

When watching Kingsman Secret Service I picked up on some dialogue which was: “you should get out of here grandpa”, “beef” and “Are we going to stand around here all day or are we going to fight”? The effect of this is that at first it was calm when the antagonists were talking to the protagonist however it shortly turn into disrespect when one of the antagonists said “you should get out of here grandpa” this is disrespect as the protagonist is about mid 40’s but the antagonists disrespect him by exaggerating his age and mocking it.

Children of men case study

Opening scene

When Theo enters the coffee shop full of people watching the news of the death of baby Diego, he appears to have no interest in the death of the youngest human on earth since the start of the infertility of the human race. This shows that he is different than the others so it makes the audience think that he is odd and has no sympathy. With sound, we start with a black screen and we get the sound of a newsreader reporting on the political interest situations around the world. The effect of this is to make the viewer focus more on the news reports and being told before we see anything that the nature of society is. Another effect that we have is that it deprives us of sight, so it becomes confusing and unsettling to us as we are trying to find out where the voice is coming from and what is happening. It connects with what people in society are feeling as well with the unsettling and unease of the event that is going on around them.  The sound of the explosion that overpowers all the other diegetic sounds.

This shows that urban space has been disrupted so the impact on us is unstable. Its a place where people are in danger and vulnerable. The ringing sound of the explosion suggests that the effect that the society is having on Theo. We hear the ringing in Theo's ear and so we are focused to identify with him that after being detached from him and the ringing sound makes us compatible with him as we can hear what he hears. Diego's death reflected on the film giving a loss of hope for humanity. We and the rest of the people feel sad and depressed as Diego symbolised as the hope of humanity and with his loss this results in the fear of danger and the end of the world. The dialogue has been covered by music which shows importance, therefore use the same explanation to talk about all the dialogue that has been spoken. Theo is so dismissive unaffected by the news and hes more focused on getting a coffee than the death of the youngest child in the world . This is shown through the high angle shot and it shows us that he is lacking the emotional response that people should have and that everyone around his has got. He remains emotionally detached as he is introduced to us as unlikely hero because of his lack of care to the society. The Mise en Scene shows us that when the camera is on the street we see the entire view. Advertising billboards and buses. Military helicopter and more other features that we would not have now this shows what kind of society they are in.

Car scene

I chose this scene from the Scifi Children of men because it was filed entirely in one shot with no cuts. Despite the complexity of having to film this action filled scene in one shot, director Alfonso Cuaron, manages to me the audience of emotions within a short amount of time. At first a sense of nostalgia, and sympathy as soon as the attacks starts. Cuaron uses many cinematic devices to create suspense and tension for the audience.

The Mis-en-scene of the orange of this scene symbolises the theme of fertility that runs throughout the entire film. The character Miriam peels the orange and hands a piece to Kee, who is the only woman in the world that is pregnant. However, at this point in the film, it is unknown that she is pregnant so nobody knows, also Theo doesn't know why he has to protect her. Therefore the mis-en-scene of the orange foreshadows the fact that Kee is pregnant because fruit is a symbol for fertility.

Throughout the film the director creates a contrast between the emotions created at the beginning of the scene with the ones created at the end. At first sympathy and a sense of nostalgia is created for the audience through the use of sound design.

As the car is driving along the road, the diegetic sound of the radio saying "The afternoon i8s looking good here on the radio Avalon, and now one for all the nostalgics out: a blast from the past, all the way back from 2003; that beautiful time where people refused to accept the suture was jus around the corner". The dialogue of the radio host about nostalgia is paralleled with the conversation that Theo  and Julian have about their relationship in the past when they used to be activists. They then play a game with a ping pong ball that they also used to play back when they also used to play back when they were together. This makes the audience fee sympathy for both Theo and Julian, and the laughing of the other characteristics in the background also creates a fun and humorous tone. Furthermore the slow pacing of the diegetic sound coming from the radio adds to the relaxed and happy tone.

Fight club - Chemical scene

The sound in this scene changes when jack has visions while trying to centre himself to avoid pain. the listener hears a train and birds. as well as background noises of items getting pushed off the table. the music mainly consists of a constant low toned note and quite scary music, creating darkness to the scene. the dialogue between tyler and jack in this scene is Tyler's way of saying you can just sit back and accept your life if its not a life you want.  In this scene, Tyler pours flaked lye on the main character's hand which is jack, which causes a chemical burn. While he is creaming, Tyler is calmly explaining to him that "It will hurt more than you've ever been burned, and you will have a scar". The main character tries to use his skills that he learned in his counselling groups, but Tyler tries to snap him out of it and make him experience the pain and want to actually feel it as well. Tyler wants him to know, that some day he is going to die without him feeling fearful. We think that this is a crucial scene in the movie because Tyler has brought the main character "one step closer to hitting rock bottom". Tyler is trying to make him let go of all his fear and not worry about living on the edge. The main character may hate Tyler in the moment, but he is doing it to help him. At the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to the main character as someone who has all of the material things he could ever want. He appears to have a good job and his life put together. His only problem seems to be his insomnia which means he cant sleep at night. Since that is happening to him he just kind of goes through every day doing what he has to do to get by. He has everything on the outside, but absolutely nothing on the inside so it seems like he is dead inside. He is introduced to Tyler Durden for a reason, although he doesn't know that reason until later on in the movie . Tyler lives on the edge all of the time as its like hes waiting for something to happen to him and is scared.  which is why He breaks the law, lives in a completely run down house, and treats people like they don't matter. The reason he makes the main character do all the crazy stuff he does, is because he is trying to eliminate his fear and not live in fear anymore.

Stacey Dooley- Documentary -

In this scene Stacey investigates why a 13 year old is selling drugs to people. the dialogue is quite muffled and quite as she is hiding a microphone in her top as she wants the viewers to listen and capture what the 13 year old boy says to about selling drugs. this is quite effective as it brings mystery to the audience. The sound in this clip is non diegtic so the people in the documentary cannot hear it. The sound is quite tense and loud which brings the audience on their feet wanting to find out now. the clothes that stacey wears are normally the clothes that dealers or buyers wear which bring suspicion to other people
