Homework: Children of men case study

Opening scene

When Theo enters the coffee shop full of people watching the news of the death of baby Diego, he appears to have no interest in the death of the youngest human on earth since the start of the infertility of the human race. This shows that he is different than the others so it makes the audience think that he is odd and has no sympathy. With sound, we start with a black screen and we get the sound of a newsreader reporting on the political interest situations around the world. The effect of this is to make the viewer focus more on the news reports and being told before we see anything that the nature of society is. Another effect that we have is that it deprives us of sight, so it becomes confusing and unsettling to us as we are trying to find out where the voice is coming from and what is happening. It connects with what people in society are feeling as well with the unsettling and unease of the event that is going on around them.  The sound of the explosion that overpowers all the other diegetic sounds.

This shows that urban space has been disrupted so the impact on us is unstable. Its a place where people are in danger and vulnerable. The ringing sound of the explosion suggests that the effect that the society is having on Theo. We hear the ringing in Theo's ear and so we are focused to identify with him that after being detached from him and the ringing sound makes us compatible with him as we can hear what he hears. Diego's death reflected on the film giving a loss of hope for humanity. We and the rest of the people feel sad and depressed as Diego symbolised as the hope of humanity and with his loss this results in the fear of danger and the end of the world. The dialogue has been covered by music which shows importance, therefore use the same explanation to talk about all the dialogue that has been spoken. Theo is so dismissive unaffected by the news and hes more focused on getting a coffee than the death of the youngest child in the world . This is shown through the high angle shot and it shows us that he is lacking the emotional response that people should have and that everyone around his has got. He remains emotionally detached as he is introduced to us as unlikely hero because of his lack of care to the society. The Mise en Scene shows us that when the camera is on the street we see the entire view. Advertising billboards and buses. Military helicopter and more other features that we would not have now this shows what kind of society they are in.

Car scene

I chose this scene from the Scifi Children of men because it was filed entirely in one shot with no cuts. Despite the complexity of having to film this action filled scene in one shot, director Alfonso Cuaron, manages to me the audience of emotions within a short amount of time. At first a sense of nostalgia, and sympathy as soon as the attacks starts. Cuaron uses many cinematic devices to create suspense and tension for the audience.

The Mis-en-scene of the orange of this scene symbolises the theme of fertility that runs throughout the entire film. The character Miriam peels the orange and hands a piece to Kee, who is the only woman in the world that is pregnant. However, at this point in the film, it is unknown that she is pregnant so nobody knows, also Theo doesn't know why he has to protect her. Therefore the mis-en-scene of the orange foreshadows the fact that Kee is pregnant because fruit is a symbol for fertility.

Throughout the film the director creates a contrast between the emotions created at the beginning of the scene with the ones created at the end. At first sympathy and a sense of nostalgia is created for the audience through the use of sound design.

As the car is driving along the road, the diegetic sound of the radio saying "The afternoon i8s looking good here on the radio Avalon, and now one for all the nostalgics out: a blast from the past, all the way back from 2003; that beautiful time where people refused to accept the suture was jus around the corner". The dialogue of the radio host about nostalgia is paralleled with the conversation that Theo  and Julian have about their relationship in the past when they used to be activists. They then play a game with a ping pong ball that they also used to play back when they also used to play back when they were together. This makes the audience fee sympathy for both Theo and Julian, and the laughing of the other characteristics in the background also creates a fun and humorous tone. Furthermore the slow pacing of the diegetic sound coming from the radio adds to the relaxed and happy tone.
